How to Become a God and the Nature of the Mists and Magic
Before we begin there are several things that must be realized.
-Magic was not introduced to Tyria until 1BE. Before that magic as we know it did not exist.
-The Mists are everything, all life comes from them, all knowledge comes from them. By this token the Mists are the only reality and the separation of the multiverse is an illusion.
-If everything comes from the Mists, then magic, and the Gods, also can trace their roots to the Mists.
Hypothesis: The Six Gods of Tyria are not actually gods. There are no supreme beings in the multiverse, only the Mists. The Gods are simply the vessels which contain portions of the Mists necessary for the material universes upkeep. They are wardens that shape and protect the Universes.
To become a god there are several steps that must be completed, how they are completed is at the discretion of the prospective god:
1. Be of born magical affinity. This does not mean any spell caster can be a god. Or that a warrior could not become a god. This means that when born, you have a part of the Mists within your immortal soul that allows you to manipulate certain aspects of the material Universe.
2. Stay alive, or in a state of undeath until becoming a god. Once your immaterial soul is unable to control your material body you are unable to manipulate the rest of the material universe, this being necessary of a god.
3. Gain a following. You need an army, or religious following to be able to back your claim of godhood up. How this is achieved is unimportant.
4. Absorb the essence of the Mists released by the defeat of a current god, OR Show the sufficient aspects of a god that has not been formed yet. You can not get something from nothing. The power of all gods is the power of Mists. You must show the Mists that you are worthy of taking the mantle of godhood.
This challenges our view of magic. Isnt magic governed by the bloodstones? Wasnt it a gift of the gods? No. That magic is the gods giving the mortals of Tryia a way to manage the planet on their own. The gods where done with their job. They wanted to go mold another planet. It also served a secondary purpose, at least five out of seven of the original gods had been recently deposed by humans (or whatever Grenth was). The replacements didnt want to fall themselves; by giving the ability to perform magic to the masses it hid the latent magical abilities of potential gods. Real magic is the manifestation of the Mists in mortals, giving them the ability to manipulate parts of the universe.
Based on this Hypothesis the history of the gods needs to be reexamined. This is my version:
~10,000 years ago- Most life on Tyria ends in some great catastrophe caused by the current god/gods of the time.
~3,000 years ago- He/They try again. This time the Forgotten are brought in from the Mists to assist in the transition. Sometime between then and 115 BE the number of gods rises to eight (to our best knowledge. Could be more, could be less.)
1205 BE- Humans appear on Tyria.
~115 BE (If the Scriptures of Dwayna tell the date of the incident.)- A young human woman by the name of Dwayna is born with latent magical ability. She posses the ability to bestow life, and possibly the ability to control the air. She gathers a following and ends a war between the humans. With her following, led by Doric, she challenges the corrupt God/Goddess of Life and defeats him/her with the support of Dhuum, him thinking to control the week new opposite of his powers.
~48 BE- In another human or dwarven war a human or dwarf named Balthazar with the latent magical ability of courage/war, and possibly fire, ends the war by aiding one side. They follow him into battle against the current god of war and win. His half brother is also latently magical with the force of destruction. He gains the power but is evil. The other new gods deny him access to their jewel, Tyria.
~48 BE- A sentient creature named Grenth with the latent magical ability of death and possibly ice enters a state of undeath. He slowly gathers a following of outcasts around him. He takes these outcasts into the Underworld and overthrew Dhuum. Sometime after the Exodus he is allowed into the group of gods when they see he isnt evil. This is why he is said not to have chosen the fate of Abaddon.
~48 BE- Beautiful unnamed human twins called Lyssa with the latent magical ability of Illusion gather a following. They overthrow the old god/goddess or acquire the godhood.
~45 BE- A human female named Melandru with the latent magical ability of Nature and Earth takes leadership of the Maguuma tribe. She overthrows the corrupt god/goddess of nature.
~1 BE- The gods decide that an overthrow of at least five gods in 200 years is out of control. They are also done with the molding of Tyria. They decide to give magic to the races of Tyria so they can take care of their gem, and to prevent others from overthrowing gods. They let the human leader of the Marga Coast hand out the powers as he had the latent magical ability of Secrets and possibly water. They felt that giving him a position of power on Tyria would quell his lust for power. However he gave too indiscriminately and he attacked the gods wardens, the Forgotten. Two of the gods felt he had gone too far. They led their armies against him and lost. He took the mantle of godhood from at least one of them. He then started to attack the other gods because they had sealed away his gift to humanity in the bloodstones. The other gods, with their new and more willing armies defeated him and imprisoned him.
1275 AE- Kormir, with the latent magical ability of secrets (unknown to her) and her Sunspears defeat Abaddon and his army. She takes the mantle of godhood from him.
Once again I will reiterate that everything comes from the Mists. The Mists give the power to the gods, the gods are nothing more than wardens for the material universe(s).
Gnave|||Interesting theory, but... Can you prove it?
I've visited almost every site in the three current chapters and I don't believe that I've yet seen anything to suggest that any of the gods, with the exception of the latest one, were once mortals.
We know that the mists are a link between all possible worlds. So, it's certainly possible that the gods are a product of the mists or even aspects of it, but they may also just have travelled through it from another world.|||Gnave, you may want to change that last date, it should 1075. That aside this is an interesting hypothesis, however since we haven't any way to prove it it will remain just that..|||Gah, I can't edit it.|||Not a bad idea. Sadly, its just an idea, but that really is all you can have with the limited stuff Anet hands to us in the form of history. Still, I like it. Would like to see something along these lines explored in Chapter 4.|||If indeed all the 6 gods was originally mortal I would support this theory.|||Very well articulated but my question is "where did the original gods which were pverthrown come from?" are we thinking that every single one of them were corrupt/cruel? surely a goddes/god of life cannot be cruel or unfeeling?|||Ever heard the expression: Life is cruel?
Maybe the old goddess of life was dying or had just been driven insane.|||I suppose we could say "life is cruel"
But i think its a very large assumption to say that EVERY one of the "old old gods" was corrupt and cruel. That would kinda indicate that all of their creations would also be corrupted and cruel or evil.|||Interesting theory but nothing more. Do we even know there were old gods except Dhuum and Menzies (bearing in mind I still haven't finished NF)? Same thign with the Mists stuff. We know nothing about that.
