Wurms

In Prophecies we encountered a bunch of wurms around the Crystal Desert region.

Basic Desert Wurms, solitary creatures that burrow underground before surfacing to attack (a sort of downwards bite).

Siege Wurms, similar in appearance to desert wurms but only able to attack with a launched projectile (a lot more downtime between attacks).

and Chaos Wurms who hang around in Tombs, possibly a corrupted version of Desert Wurms. Similar solitary existence suggests while they appear at the same time as the rest of the Tombs invasion, they are not aligned but simple follow as a feeding opportunity.

Factions only possible wurm appearance are the Leviathans, aqauatic varients, mostly bound in the jade. The single active one found in the Deep acts similarly to Siege Wurms but with greater size and power.

Nightfall gives us more Desert Wurms. But also the Junundu wurms.

Junundu are alot more social. The existence of a controlling Queen suggests a rough hive-mind, along with at least 8 wurms at each wurm spur (which given their inability to travel easily across rock suggests a high density in each sand area).

Junundu travel across the surface when being "ridden", mostly staying only slightly exposed compare to the towering attack of the siege and desert wurms.

Junundu sport a variety of skills as opposed to the single attack of previous wurms, including the ability to eat corpses for additional skills (temporarily or permanently in the case of their siege attack).

Desert wurms will attack Junundu (or at least while you're riding them) which suggests the two species have no particular affiliation (e.g. the Jun queen has no influence over desert wurms).

Elder siege wurms (in the Hordes of Darkness quest) look and act similarly to the Jun Queen which seems to set them apart from the Prophecies siege wurms. It may be possible that the more solitary wurms are effectively outcast somehow rather than a completely seperate species.|||there are also the wurms on the fire isles, they act a lot like the casual desert wurm.

in FoW there are the same wurms but another varient being the seige wurms, but of the magma type.|||Don't forget the Frost Wurms in the Shiverpeaks.|||Do we even want to count the pre-searing midget versions that have a queen as well?|||We don't know that they are solitary. In fact, they appear to be more like pack hunters, there are usually two to four wurms in a group. A single bee does not negate a hive elsewhere. If we use the wurms we have seen as an example, it appears that most wurms have a queen.|||Does this perhaps mean we have the gender of Maw wrong? Could Maw the Mountainheart in fact be the QUEEN of the Frost Wurms?|||Well, earthworms are a-sexual, I think.

I don't know if this also applies to Maw, but he/she/it could be genderless or maybe both male and female at the same time.|||Earthworms are not asexual, they are hermphroditic.|||Oh, sorry - it's been a while since 4th grade biology.|||Quote:

Is this based on their behavior in the Desolation? (Not up to there yet...)

In Prophecies, the Sand and Siege Wurms appear to be mostly solitary hunters. They're rarely encountered in groups larger than one. If there are more than one in an area, it typically tends to be a location with a large amount of prey, which suggests that the wurms are there simply becaue of the abundance of food.

There is one exception. In Vulture Drifts, there is a large concentration of wurms (I found as many as 8 there once) straight east from Dunes of Despair, near the towering rock formations. Could it be that this area is a 'nest' of sorts? Perhaps there is a Sand Wurm queen living in the area, but she simply does not come to the surface.

The Wurms in the Fire Islands seem to follow the same sort of behavior as their desert cousins. The Frost Wurms of the Shiverpeaks, however, tend to come in pairs, and frequently more, suggesting that they may hunt in packs similar to wolves, lions and other hunting beasts.

The Chaos Wurms look to be mutated versions of the wurms. They don't attack the other forces of Menzies/Abbadon, suggesting that they are allied with them, or at the very least, they're used like trained beasts, similar to the way the Luxons use the Siege Turtles.

In Cantha, there are also the Guardian Serpents in Urgoz' Warren. I don't have much experience with them, so I don't know for certain whether they are actually a giant species of snake, or whether they're another species of Wurm.
