Official Winds of Change Thread.

[:1]This thread is for gathering what we know about WoC and guessing what will happen.

Firstly the main wiki link:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Winds_of_Change

Quote:

Winds of Change is the third chapter of Guild Wars Beyond. Taking place in Cantha, Winds of Change will explain some events that happen after the end of Factions and, like previous chapters, will foreshadow events leading to the situation during Guild Wars 2. Completion of the Factions campaign will be the only requirement to begin Winds of Change.[1]

[edit]Notes

The story of Hearts of the North has a connection to Winds of Change, most likely through Miku and her background story.

"Involves the plight of the tengu, the origins of the Ministry of Purity, and the isolation of the entire continent."[2]

The amount of story content will be comparable to a small expansion.

So there are a few hints:

1) Miku

WoC will be related to her story. Here is what we know about her.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Watch...us_Beginnings)

Quote:

Where the Embedded Arrowhead is

Keiran Thackeray: "Why are you so intent on finding Danthor?"

Miku: "I had finally found a home in Kryta. He...took that away"

Miku: "He branded my loved ones traitors. They were all I had left."

Quote:

At Danthor

Miku: "Danthor! Turn and face me!"

Danthor the Adament: "I don't have time for this. I must see his plan is set into motion."

Danthor the Adament: "You there. Handle this.."

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Majes...nce_of_Blades)

Quote:

At Danthor's Location

Miku: "There you are, Danthor! Accept your fate and die in peace, or die struggling in Futility!"

Danthor the Adamant: "Such tenacity. You still pursue me? It makes no difference, you know."

Danthor the Adamant: "His plans are already coming to fruition. What happens here will change nothing."

Miku: "Anything can change; all that's required is the will to do so. Let me show you mine!"

After Danthor dies

Miku: "At last...now the fallen can rest easier."

Keiran Thackeray: "It looks like some of the White Mantles escaped further into the Maguuma Jungle. What will you do now?"

Miku: "I need to continue. This time, for myself. The question is, Keiran, what will you do?"

Keiran Thackeray: "It's dangerous to keep on alone. I will accompany you."

Miku: "That's kind of you. I wonder, though. Maybe your kindness reveals that you rely on others too much."

Keiran Thackeray: "What do you mean?"

Miku: "Oh, I don't know. Is protecting me an excuse to keep on like this?"

Keiran Thackeray: "Let's keep on going; we don't want to lose them."

-Danthor killed Miku's "family" in Kryta by branding her "family" Shining Blade supporters. This might somehow "support" the goal of a certain someone.

If we can find a list of all the people killed by the White Mantle we might have a better clue.

-Miku either have family back in Cantha, or she is an orphan. My guess is the latter.

-Donthor is serving someone, who wanted something done in Majesty's Rest. All we know of this "someone" is that he is male.

2) Plight of the Tengu

There is no info on this right now. But sounds like some kind of promise the Tengus made to somebody.

3) Ministry of Purity

Once again, no info on this whatsoever. Sounds like a ministry to "cleanse". Cleanse what is the question.

However, the timeline gives a hint of what this ministry will do.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Timeline

Quote:

1127 AE: Emperor Usoku defeats the Kurzicks and the Luxons, unifies Cantha and begins purging non-humans and political enemies.

Emperor Kisu ruled from 1058 AE to 1127AE (69 years). So he probably started the war before his son Usoku finished it.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Timeline

Quote:

1058 AE: Kintah dies and is succeeded by his son Kisu, who becomes the 31st Canthan Emperor.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Emperor_Kisu

Quote:

Kisu's reign has lasted 69 years and he is one of only 3 emperors for which we know the length of tenure.

4) Isolation of the entire continent

No surprise here, as that is destined to happen on 1219 AE with the awakening of Zhaitan. However since the current timeline is 1080 AE, my guess is there will be hints of the upcoming disaster. Or someone does something in 1080 AE that leads to the awakening Zhaitan.

So with everything together, here is my guess.

1) That "certain someone" is Emperor Kisu. He needed something from Kryta to defeat the Kurzicks and Luxons. He bribed Danthor and other White Mantle members to do the dirty work for him. Kisu might have secretly supported the White Mantle since the beginning.

2) Whatever it is, it won't be good for Krytan people. Miku's "family" found out and tried to stop it. They got killed instead.

3) Kisu will start the war against the Kurzicks and the Luxons as soon as he gets his "thing".

4) Tengus will "plight" to help Kurzicks and Luxons in their war against Cantha.|||Skimmed your post. But regarding Miku's original family. It's also possible that they died during the plague (during Factions). That is, imo, the most likely reason why she went to Kryta in the first place.

Danthor most likely was fulfilling Isaiah's plans. I see no reason why Danthor would do Kisu's work, personally. And Isaiah is said to be someone who'd have plans in the case of his death - and we see the White Mantle fleeing en masse to the Maguuma, which was most likely his plan (aka the White Mantle Missive found in the third mission). Danthor's goal wasn't in Majesty's Rest - it seemed very clear to me that he was heading to the Maguuma Jungle (hence why he was at the eastern exit).

A lot of innocent people were killed during the White Mantle's regime, especially when the Peacekeepers got involved. I don't think there's anything hidden behind Miku's family's death - it was just lies and tyrannical killings.

Kisu has always been shown as a man who seeks peace and helps those who are needy - multiple times in Factions he is said to have had his personal soldiers, those meant to protect him and only him, to aid the people because the Celestial Ministry was caught up in their documents and wouldn't get anything done. I don't see him as starting a war against the Kurzicks and Luxons - something he promoted for the opposite of in Factions.

The Tengu's plight is most likely a continuation of what we've seen in the shadows during Factions - the repercussions of the Tengu Wars (again, something that Kisu worked to end). There are multiple quests in Factions of the tengu having issues and some individuals hating them or oppressing them. That's likely being continued into Winds of Change.|||Kisu did appear to be a nice fellow, however was he really? A lot of politicians pretended to be an upstanding man, only later to show his real self and commit atrocities.

Another evidence of my theory is the timeline. Kisu ruled from 1058AE-1127AE. After he died his son Usoku took over. And in that very same year, 1127AE, he conquered both Luxons and Kurzicks to unify Cantha. So it appeared that Usoku did this great conquest within 1 year.

There are 2 possibilities.

1) Usoku conquered Luxons and Kurzicks within one year.

Cantha might have became so strong that it simply overpowered both. Another possibility is Luxons and Kurzicks had fought each other for so long that they both had became almost non existent.

This story follows the history of Qin's unification of China. Qin used its enemies' hostility with each other to conquer them one by one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Yique

I personally don't buy into this story. I don't see how Cantha can conquer both Luxons and Kurzicks within a year, from start to finish. The land of Cantha isn't much bigger than Luxons and Kurzick territory. Not to mention Cantha also need to fight off the Wardens and Jade Sea creatures to take over those territories.

2) Cantha had been at war against Luxons and Kurzicks for years. Usoku merely finished what his father started.

This makes much more sense to me. Nations like Luxons and Kurzicks don't just fall in a year, even less so when both within the same year. Even if Cantha had superior advantage over both, it will still take them a lot of time to transport men and supplies needed for the conquest. Without automobiles, even walking takes time.|||Actually, I highly doubt that he managed to:

1) Gain enough public support to not have revolts while performing 2 (no such knowledge of them exists so we can only assume they didn't happen).

2) Spend 1 million gold to boost the nation's military strength high enough to complete 3 through 5.

3) Defeat the Luxons and Kurzicks

4) Force the Luxons and Kurzicks to merge into the empire.

5) Force non-humans out of the land.

The Movement of the World merely states that 1127 AE is the year he "took a firm hold of his nation" - which doesn't mean ascending to the throne that year. So your lacking a third assumption:

Usoku didn't ascend to the throne and do all that stuff in one year, but rather managed to merely finish steps 2-5 in one year (again, "took firm hold of his nation" merely states that's when he had control - this could mean when he began his conquest, ascended the throne, or finish his conquest - the last being most likely, given the age of Kisu).|||Keep in mind that winning a war does not mean you have to conquer a foe or his territory in all out battle. It CAN be done by "pursuading" the opposing leaders to surrender or swear fealty to you. The Mongols "conquered" countless city states by simply showing up at their gates and letting their reputations win the fight.

Hitler conquered millions of square miles of Europe without firing a shot in the late 1930s.

I'm not saying that's how it happens, just that it CAN be done without a drop of blood being spilt (either the threat of blood, or some other political reason can be motivation enough).|||I somehow doubt it... the GW universe is full of combat (yay).

But... it could happen via relatively important but small-scale events that the heroes participate in, and may not involve a full war.|||What about the players? Thousands of heroes (players) are allied with the kurzicks and luxons, heroes that have killed gods! am i the only one who thinks it would be rather odd for us to stand idly by while the luxon and kurzick nations are annihilated?|||maybe kisu was a good guy, but one of the white mantle infiltrated his ranks as an adviser type (been there sometime)...and was telling lies/saying bad things etc.....could be why cantha ultimately thinks krytans are all bad, and then isolates itself---|||Quote:

I hope you realize that Usoku eliminates the Kurzicks and Luxons 38 years after the War in Kryta - that's 57 years after the Searing.

The heroes will be pretty damn old by then - which, btw, there isn't going to be thousands of heroes in the lore, but rather most likely a situation of 3 nameless heroes (one per campaign) and then the heroes and henchmen; so really, the god-killing hero(es) is highly likely to be unrelated to the Factions campaign and therefore the Kurzicks and Luxons.

@cosyfiep: I don't think it was ever mentioned that Usoku or other Canthans think Krytans are bad... Cantha actually has a history of going from open to isolationist to open again. I think Usoku is 4th emperor to go isolationist from Tyria.|||Maybe it's possible that Kisu is droven mad by his brothers dead. And now sees it as a fault of the tengus. something like that. The Kurzicks and The Luxon will become 1 alliance by the help of the hero (you). something like that sounds a bit simple but if you work it out in a big story it could be the thing that happend. And maybe Kisu reveales a spell that awakes a dragon that split the continents appart.

Lore from Edge of Destiny (MAJOR SPOILERS)

[:1]Well, there is a thread for Ghosts of Ascalon (but none for EoD), so, I'm starting one !

Ok, so here are some tidbits, bobs, scraps, and other stuff. Please do feel free to add more to the thread:

Spoiler

- Rytlock Brimstone possess Sohothin, Rurik's Feiry Dragon Sword. How he came to acquire the sword is unknown.

- Rytlock acquired his rank via killing someone higher up than him whenever they made a mention that he worked with a human (AKA: Logan).

- Mesmers are pretty much confirmed (or very well teased) thanks to the mention that Queen Jennah is a Mesmer.

- Glint was a champion for one of the elder dragons!

- Glint dies several years before the start of GW2's player storyline.

- Glint had in her possession, a spear made from the spine of her dragon master. This spear can be used to kill Kralkatorrik.

- Logan Thackeray has an older brother named Dylan. He dies during the elder dragon's assault on Ebonhawke. Dylan Thackeray holds the position as captain of the Seraph and this causes tention between the two brothers.

- In the GW2 character preview trailers, Logan's VA mentions there is a dark secret to him that makes him view himself as not very hero like (or something along those lines). My guess is that it has to be how he abandoned Destiny's Edge during their planned assault on Kralkatorrik to save Queen Jennah.

- The planned assault on the elder dragon fails as Snaff, Zojja's master, is killed by dragonspawn (aka: Elder dragon minions). He held an important part in keeping the dragon down to the ground so that Rytlock could use the previously said spear to the elder dragon

- Jora and Svanir are mentioned, but not much else.

- Girl plant on girl plant tension/action! (I will not go into greater detail .)

- What made Destiny's Edge famous was the killing of not one, not two, but THREE elder dragon champions.

- Destiny's Edge split up just as they failed to kill Kralkatorrik. Rytlock was the second to leave (as Logan was technically the first). All members drifted off on their own afterwards.

On an off topic note, I support a Caithe x Faiolin (spelling?) fanclub.|||Even thought it's a spoiler thread, you should put some spoiler tags... especially on parts that happen at the end of the book and/or are big events. e.g.

Spoiler

Glint dies|||Not much of a spoiler imo, but about Queen Jennah and her profession:

Spoiler

mesmers have been confirmed since GoA. Nothing, not even this book, confirms them as playable, mind you.|||I am not using spoilers, because anybody viewing this thread should be aware of the spoilers anyway:

* Zojja is an Elementalist and attunes to different elements throughout the novel

* Snaff shows no hint as whether he belongs to a "profession" or not

* Logan uses his "blue" protective auras & "weapon spells" a lot in the novel (one time called "guardian aura"), which hints to the BML-class

* Eir shows abilities of a Ranger

* Rytlock uses a lot of power moves, which indicates Warrior

* Caithe seems to use critical strikes, dodges and movement abilities close to "shadowsteps"

* There are 144 Seraph guarding the queen of Kryta. Almost all got killed at the attack of the dragonspawn on Ebonhawke

* The Asura gate at Ebonhawke was repaired by the Asura after Destiny's Edge defeated a general of Primodorus south of Rata Sum, but seems to be badly damaged again after the dragonspawn attack

* There seem to be a lot of Asura gates around Tyria, but no location described in DE makes it possible to locate the gates (except the few we already know, like LA)

* Both Norn & Asura seem to develop into seafaring nations as well as humans (ships tailored to their size are described). No specific Charr or Sylvari vessel is metioned

* a lot of knowledge of power stones is lost with the death of Snaff (e.g. the protection against the "mesmerizing" power of the Elder Dragons that turns living things into dragon spawn)

* our DE heroes are still protected by their tattoos with the particles of the gray power stone invented by Snaff

* crafting in GW2 might have a magical/mystical component, because Eir has the ability to craft stone & wood with amazing speed

I wouldn't interpret too much naughtiness into the "she loves/belongs to me" relationship between Caithe & Faolain. Since all Sylvari are "born" by the Pale Tree, there is really no reason to fix them on a biological gender of male/female like we do with other GW races. It is just their phenotype, when they appear as male or female to others. Since it would be kind of lame to have an asexual race, I assume the sylvari are pan-/omisexual, so they could fall in love with any sentient being that seems to be worthy of their affection.|||Quote:

I doubt that Eir casting spells on herself (or evoking the power of the spirits as I believe the book phrases it in chapter 1) would be reason to define a mechanic in gw2, unless I'm misunderstanding the "crafting in gw2" bit. >.>|||Devours apparently have spines (logan broke the spine of one in the fight with the ogres). Which is really weird.

And the Asura gate in Ebonhawke was broken for a while, so that caravans from DR had to go to Ebonhawke to supply the fort.|||Quote:

Oh sure, ruin a guy's dream why don't you .

Back on topic, it seems the Shining Blade still exist but are now part of an "elite" or personal guard for the queen.|||We've known that bit on the Shining Blade for a while. They're the right-hand of the queen, while the Seraph are the protectors of Kryta (taking the role of the Lionguard).

And yes, it is weird that Devourers have spines... Unless the book meant the spines on the shell? Doubt it, would have to read that fight again.|||This is more of a question, I guess, but Glint mentioned something about how she helped the humans just to have them attack her later on and she had to defeat them in defense of her master. Did she mean us? Or is this something that happened between the end of GW1 and the first book? Maybe it's not even important, but it stood out to me.|||Quote:

No, those are two different things. First she mentions how the humans she helped attacked her (I guess too many people went for that mission's bonus...), and then how, when she was still serving her master, she used to kill humans.

On the gods, Elder Dragons and creation

[:1]I am new to this forum , so please direct me to other threads if i have missed those

that already discuss this subject.

First off the "Human Gods"

According to the human history they "created Tyria"

However on closer examination of the actual lore book from GW:P

Qoute:

It was almost three thousand years ago that a race of serpents stepped out of the Rift onto the soil of Tyria. Unlike ordinary serpents, these moved upright, used language, and adhered to an elaborate culture. They had been summoned by the old gods, brought to this world to be the custodians. Their task: shepherd the other creatures of the land through this time of transition, while the gods continued to create the world around them

It is stated that tyria either already existed or they were change it.

It does not directly state that they were the creators.

It further states in the lore book of GW:P that the Humans were the first

and only Race to rise to providence and not adhere to the benevolent teachings of the Forgotten.

Quote :

From the Tarnished Coast in the west to the Bay of Sirens (now called the Sea of Sorrows) in the south, from the far eastern reaches of the Crystal Desert to the Giants' Basin on the northern coast of Kryta, Tyria flourished under the protection of these mystical creatures. The serpents were the protectors of the land, the keepers of knowledge, the teachers of all things, and during their time the world was in balance.

Through the various Scriptures and the fact that the custodians(Forgotten) Summoned from the rift by the gods were not aided by these same gods during there push out of the world of tyria by humans. We now all "assume"

that humans are the Chosen race of these gods.

Now for the actual question to these pieces of "Human History" that make no sense at all given what we know about guildwars 2 and the Eldar Dragons.

First off the Problem of the Char as an atheist race.

If they existed before the the humans arrived on Tyria 205 BE

then over they coexisted with the forgotten who also spread word about the

"Gods" and since the Lore guides of GW:P "reads"/suggests" that humans

human were the first to "Defy" the forgotten and there teachings by making there own ways.

Second The slight paradox of the Elder Dragons.

Why would the gods create beings other then themselves

who are capable of not only destroying there chosen race

but also the world they have created over the course of millennia?.

To answer this apparent conflict i draw 3 possible conclusions.

1 What we know up to know was Human history and only a small glimpse

of Tyrias general history.

Or ( and please be open minded )

2 The dragons are in fact extra dimensional beings similar to the Human gods.

Now first Read Page 334 to 340 of the Pocket version of Edge of Destiny

the few pages before the chapter Dragon Rise.

In here Glint states that "3000 years she was Set here as a custodian of the world ( Tyria ) . Hmm what do we also know about +- 3000 years ago?

Ah yes the Forgotten were summoned from the rift. (Assuming Human history is fact)

She then tells our good heroes that she has infact already lived through at least One Awakening of the Eldar Dragons. Now knowing that these are very hungry critters so to speak you'd think that we would have some lore detailing mass extinctions 3000 years ago, we dont (I say 3000 years ago because thats when glint supposedly arived on tyria).

So if this has happend before were is the evidence?

3 Human History is True and false in the fact that the Human Gods created Tyria.

Again this is going to be a long shot but hear me out.

The Dragons were last awake at the time of the extinction/dissaperence of the Giganticus Lupicus at 10000 BE. The dragons Ate them giving proof

of a mass extinction event ( and certainly giving them a full belly ).

The world was then barren over the course of the next 7000 years

at wich point the human Gods step in from the Rift and take matters in there

own hands. Thus creating the world as the Humans know it but knot being the ultimate creators of the World.

I was going to tie in the dwarvens but as so little concrete is known about them i reather not pull any more longshots ( as i think i have reached my limet for quete a while )

This was written at 1 am in the morning during a night of insomnia .

Please dicuss,comment,elaborate ( and be mercyfull )|||Quote:

Afther sleep and better research i would like to amend the conclusions i have drawn above.

Conclusion number 1 : To vague please forget reading it.

Conclusion number 3 extra add of information :

The dwarven race, lore (and if the new GW2 trail is considered lore)

basicly states that the reason the dwarves exist is to fight the Destroyers

(Elder dragons and servents thereof). So how about this along with the

other elder races ( Seer , Mursaat , Druids ) the great Dwarf is a survivor of the last dragon reign. Unlike the seers , mursaat and the druids the Great Dwarfs race was hit more severly , proberly by primordius retreating underground into there domain. While the mursaat and seers fell into wars.

The Great dwarf as progenitor created the dwarf race not to destroy the elder dragons (as this to them was proven inpossible durring there existence under the eldar dragons) but to prevent them from waking up. I know that this indicates that the entire dwarven race is noting but a set of tools.

The reason that i state that the mursaat and seers were survivors of the first reign of the dragons is because Glint notes them as ancient. This conclusion (Conclusion 3) implies that glint was over 11000 years old , and when a being of this age decribes ancient i personaly am more inclined to believe that this was truely a long time ago.

Now with this reply i have tryed to integrate te old races , however

The norn and asura are not factored into this.

The norn for once, while the Spirets of the Wild could be interrpeted as servents of Melandru or relatives of the Druids ( Post ascencion as encountered during GW:P in there spiritual form). Further more in the shape shifting ability of the norn magic? and

iff so why dont we have evidence of norn before they could transform. Because magic was gifted by the "Human Gods"

And then there is the asura.

If the gods (Human gods) gifted the races of tyria with magic then this

would seem to contradict everything they believe ( Ethernal Alchemy ).

We know that the human gods are a fact due to the following:

We have had interactions with there emisary"s (Temple of ages during favour and the

actual beings labeld as emisary's during the cantha campaing )

We have prove that they were at someting in tyria and that they gifterd magic and modified it ( the booldstones ).

As far as i understand the Ethernal Alchemy is states that everything is part of a larger whole and there for it must have always existed in some form or another. The Adding of magic seams to be indicrect opposite of this basis.

The sylvariys origin is not discussed as while we know the orgin clear then any other race , that currently about all we do know about them.

The Human cunundrum :

They appear on tyria afther there gods "terraformed tyria" sugestion that they like there gods are not native to tyria at all.

Secondly most of the other "new" races ( Excluding dwarves and asura)

could have evolved of current of be on ofshoot of animal life. ( Char > Lion ancestors? for example )

How ever there is no indication of human evolution currently within lore or the game.|||Mr. Sobani, if you want to modify your initial post, there should be an edit button at the bottom. In fact, it would seem to me that is not the case, as she was made as Kralkatorrik's champion, not the guardian/custodian of Tyria.

It seems more likely that 3,000 years ago is when she made the pact with the Six Gods to be the custodian of the world and with said pact, the forgotten were brought, and that Glint is far older than 3,000 years.|||allright, how I envision the creation of the world (universe) of tyria: I think it all began with The Mists.
Quote:

Before there were humans or dwarves, before there were even worlds or the stars that light the night sky, there was but one thing in the universe—the Mists. The Mists touch all things. They are what binds the universe together, past, present, and future. They are the source of all good and evil, of all matter and knowledge. It is said that all forms of life, no matter how simple or complex, can trace their origins back to this one place.

Taken from the manuscript.

From the Mists, somehow, the universe formed, including planet Tyria. How the timeline went, I do not know, and I think its very difficult to say anything sensible about that too. The human history books might be wrong, for various reasons. Now, I presume that from the Mists, also the Gods were formed. The Gods are obviously not omnipotent, seeing as they can be defeated, and possibly do not care much for the Humans and other beings on the world of Tyria. (Why don't they grand us miniguns to destroy the elder dragons?) The dragons might have been created from the Mist as well, or are beings created by other unknown Gods. (or maybe even created by the Old Gods for some unknown reason). We just do not know enough.

As for the origin of life on Tyria? Possibly life was created, by the Gods or the Mists. Possibly it just evolved.. I think this is most likely the case for most creatues. (the dwarfs might be an exception, together with the Forgotten.) Again we simply do not know for certain. The Guild Wars version of Darwin has yet to show him(her)self.

Magic comes from the ether I believe. Ether is the substance that mesmer use for their magic. Therefore it might also be used differently by all the other caster professions. The origins of Ether? Perhaps also emanations from the mist, seeing as the mists is the mortar that holds the world together, it penetrates everything, like ether. The Gods, when they granted us magic, probably just taught us how to bend the ether and preform magical feats.

And the meaning of the other Spirits and Gods of tyria? (Koda, the spirits of the wild, maybe even the pale tree) Either they are created through the mist because sentient beings started believing in them, or they are, like Mr. Sobani suggested, different aspects of the Old Gods. The pale tree is also very interesting to read about. A tree spirit being that can sense the world around her and is connected with her.. seedlings, and saps from them their strongest emotions and thought. Maybe the collective subconcious of the sylvari make up the Pale tree. But this is a discussion for another time.

(On a more personal note, Lyssa is the most interesting of all the Gods. Being the Goddess of chaos and beauty, illusion and truth, she might be the one that is keeping us from seeing the truth, keeping us under a certain world-illusion. So pray to her, everyday, for she might lift the illusion a bit and give you insight into the truths about the world. But that is something the Lyssa mystics among us should meditate on. ;) )

Thats an awful big assumption. Didn't the manuscripts state that the Gods came to Tyria. That means they weren't formed at all. Perhaps they always existed.

Their presence on this world seems to suggest otherwise. They seem to care quite a big deal, enough to send down avatars to communicate to the humans.

The dragons are older more powerful beings than the Gods would be the obvious answer.

I know that we don't know for certain, but that is what seems most likely. And if you look at real mythologies, equivalents of the mists exists. And these "real" Mists most of the time spawn the gods of that mythology. So I think we can assume that something similar can be said for the GuildWars mythology.

Abaddon was defeated by humans. And being pretty damn powerful does not make you omnipotent.

Yes you are right about that, though if I care for someone, and I was a God, I would help them a great deal more. But then again, I'm not a God, and Gods work in mysterious ways.

Same here, the elder dragons might be equally or more powerful than the Gods. If they really cared, they could battle the Dragons themselves, instead of letting us puny humans get stepped on. Or atleast give us much more effective weaponry to fight them.

(maybe they are fighting the dragons, in the mists or in some other dimention. And is that the reason why the Gods are less present in GuildWars2, because they are being repressed by the Elder Dragons).

I thought about that, but it just doesn't add up. Lyssa is the Goddess of illusion, wouldn't that automatically make her the Goddess of truth? (being 2 faced and all...)

Maybe we are all taking this way to serious. ;)|||Quote:

Still, for the sake of lore you'd have to first base it on some evidence before making the assumption. Currently, the manuscripts explicitly state the opposite, and no evidence what so ever indicates otherwise... so... what's your point?

Abaddon was defeated while severely weakened by the Gods, and imprisoned, and while the heroes were aided by the Gods. Not to mention one of the heroes actually took his place and became a Goddess herself in the process. I would call those less than fair circumstances.

That only holds true for the Judeo-Christian God. In Guild Wars the Gods do not seem to work in mysterious ways at all. They seem to be quite present, and noticeable, and their ways seem pretty straight forward.

Currently there's no reason to assume they are capable of fighting the dragons at all. The Gods of Tyria seem to need their followers in order to do anything to stop the dragons... and its a losing battle. Maybe they are being repressed by the dragons, maybe the humans forgot about them, maybe the people of Tyria no longer needed them, and maybe a bit of all of those things together. I wonder if GW2 will answer this... the silent reply I got to my question at Gamescom seems to suggest that we will learn more.

Being the Goddess of Illusion does not automatically make you the Godess of lies as well... (although some necromancers might view this differently). Lyssa is mostly about inspiration, the driving force behind art and creativity.

Lore is serious business. :P

Lore Forum Rules, Policies, and Proper Usage of Theory or Hypothesis.

[:1]Greetings Community,

I would like to be the first to welcome you all to the Lore forum. This is a step forward in uncovering the hidden lore of GuildWars.

Lore Forum and You

Keep On Topic: As this is a lore forum, while initially requested by members of the community, is involved in searching for lore as part of the TAOS "Tyrian Academy of Sciences", this is still a community forum. This means that any and all are welcome to get involved and post no matter your affiliations. This is not the TAOS Lore forum, this is the GWO Community Lore Forum.

Again, as this is a LORE forum, please only post topics that stay to the subject. Any thread that may not be suitable for the forum will be moved to a more approprate location.

As with all GWO forums:

No Inflamatory posts or threads

No degrading, racists, or derogatory posts or threads

Respect is to be given to all posters. You don't have to like each other, but you have to get along.

All posts are the property and opinion of the poster. While it may not be something you may agree to, respect must be shown. Whether or not it is what you may agree on, it is their opinion, and their opinion alone, no matter how farfetched it may be. Please do not result to flaming or degrading a person based on their view.

ALL Posting Guidelines for GWO are in effect here if anything was missed above.

Thank You!|||Respect other people's hypothesises, theories, and ideas. No matter how farfetched they are. It is okay to argue a point, but aruging a point and insulting the poster of the point are very different. An argument is based on your own scientific information, an insult is based on your own opinion of the poster. For example, if someone says "2+2=5", it is perfectly okay to mathematically show they are mistaken, however it is not okay to call the poster "stupid" or "n00b", or say "2+2=4 stupid". Nothing can be accomplished by taking cheap shots at each other in this manner.|||As to posting questions, yes, This is a lore forum, it does not mean only articles should be posted. Any questions, comments, or topics related to lore from anyone is welcome. We are not the lore police. Lets just try to keep the forum for lore only as there are forums for everything that the community may want to discuss.|||In a forum that concentrates on controversal issues regarding GuldWars Lore what drives us forward is our opinions.

All "constructive" opinions are to be respected as this is part of the forum guidelines. There is to be NO negative responses to ANY possibe comment. What is considered negative and positive is left to any moderator. There is a difference between posting a respectfull opposing view and simply wishing to post a negative comment.

All views on this forum is strickly the opinion of the community member and does not reflect the views of GWOnline.Net itself.

This is a place to share knowledge and explore the hidden lore of GuildWars. Let us do it with no flaming or negative comments. This is not because there have been, but posted to prevent it from happening.

Anyone found violating forum rules will be contacted, so please.....play nice :)|||As of July 28th, 2006:

The Lore Forum is divided into three main sections--Tyrian Lore, Canthan Lore, and General Lore.

Below is a quick run through of what to post in each of these areas:

Tyrian Lore- In this subforum, lore related to the continent of Tyria or to the first Guild Wars game, Guild Wars: Prophecies, should be posted.

Canthan Lore- In this subforum, lore related to the continent of Cantha or to the second Guild Wars game, Guild Wars: Factions, should be posted.

General Lore Forum- Here is where lore relating to things that cross continents or games, such as connections between places or characters, areas accessible from both games (Fissue of Woe, the Mists, Underworld, etc), or topics that do not fit anywhere else, or do not have a specific subforum, should be posted.|||As of July 29th, 2006:

Another new subforum has just opened in the Lore Forum in addition to the ones previously added--Elonian Lore.

As the title suggests, this forum is a place to post lore relating to the continental body of Elona and Guild Wars: Nightfall.

Note: Lore relating to the Elonians in the Crystal Desert should still be posted in Tyrian Lore.|||As of December 16th, 2006

I've noticed that every other post nowandays in the Lore Forum is simply someone dismissing an entire thread as "a game mechanic" or "the developers reused a skin". While these are very valid opinions, they are not within the context of the Lore Forum, and as such, should not be posted.

In the same way we do not discuss things like map travel, HUDs, UIs, and health bars as they are not considered lore, we should not be dismissing people's ideas as just game mechanics. This is not a valid way to debate someone, and is quickly becoming an overused and played out excuse.

The Lore Forum exists to discuss the aspects of the in-game world. Topics that violate the fourth wall by including the hand of the developers as a valid scientific excuse are not acceptable.

With this in mind, as of now, I will remove any and all posts containing the "only a reused skin" or "only a game dynamic" argument. If a post is significant, and only has this phrase or a similar phrase tacked on to the bottom, I will remove the phrase and leave a note on the post.

If your only basis of disagreement is "coincidence" or "game mechanic", I ask you to refrain from posting and let users who are interested in legitamately discussing the subject continue to debate unhindered. Show the same respect for others as you would expect yourself.

Thank you.|||Too often the words "hypothesis", "theory", and "guess/assumption" are thrown around to mean the same thing. However, this is not the case. The purpose of this thread is to explain and highlight the difference between the two in the hopes that people will begin to understand the proper usage of the terms.

HYPOTHESIS

Quote:

A hypothesis (from Greek ὑπόθεσις) is a suggested explanation of a phenomenon or reasoned proposal suggesting a possible correlation between multiple phenomena. The term derives from the ancient Greek, hypotithenai meaning "to put under" or "to suppose". The scientific method requires that one can test a scientific hypothesis. Scientists generally base such hypotheses on previous observations or on extensions of scientific theories. (Wikipedia)

Quote:

hypothesis (hī-pŏth'ĭ-sĭs) Pronunciation Key

n. pl. hypotheses (-sēz')

  1. A tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.

  2. Something taken to be true for the purpose of argument or investigation; an assumption.

  3. The antecedent of a conditional statement.

[Latin, subject for a speech, from Greek hupothesis, proposal, supposition, from hupotithenai, hupothe-, to suppose : hupo-, hypo- + tithenai, to place; see dhē- in Indo-European roots.]

(The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition)

THEORY

Quote:

In scientific usage, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech. A theory is a logically self-consistent model or framework for describing the behavior of a related set of natural or social phenomena. It originates from and/or is supported by experimental evidence (see scientific method). In this sense, a theory is a systematic and formalized expression of all previous observations that is predictive, logical and testable. In principle, scientific theories are always tentative, and subject to corrections or inclusion in a yet wider theory. Commonly, a large number of more specific hypotheses may be logically bound together by just one or two theories. As a general rule for use of the term, theories tend to deal with much broader sets of universals than do hypotheses, which ordinarily deal with much more specific sets of phenomena or specific applications of a theory. (Wikipedia)

Quote:

theory

In science, an explanation or model that covers a substantial group of occurrences in nature and has been confirmed by a substantial number of experiments and observations. A theory is more general and better verified than a hypothesis. (See Big Bang theory, evolution, and relativity.)

[Chapter:] Physical Sciences and Mathematics

(The American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition)

****

So there you have it. Although vernacular tends to confuse the words "theory" and "hypothesis" they are distinctly different concepts. Or to summarize:

Quote:

Theory, hypothesis are used in non-technical contexts to mean an untested idea or opinion. A theory in technical use is a more or less verified or established explanation accounting for known facts or phenomena: the theory of relativity. A hypothesis is a conjecture put forth as a possible explanation of phenomena or relations, which serves as a basis of argument or experimentation to reach the truth: This idea is only a hypothesis. (Random House Unabridged Dictionary)|||As of November 30th, 2007

Any posts containing things such as "Certain NPC/s is/are a n00b/s." or anything in regards to that context will be removed. This isn't really adding to the discussion and may as well be spam.

Also, please refrain from bringing up NPC levels in the discussion as it is also irrelevant.

A little late in the game mind everyone, and I think by now everyone gets the idea, but either way. Any and all information relevant to Guild Wars: Eye of the North is to be posted in the Northern Tyrian Lore subforum.

Thank you.

The Index is more or less complete, there is little left to contribute until new pets are discovered.

That said, if you have something to contribute, by all means feel free to contribute it. If not, then I'm not exactly sure what you are asking/criticising.

Quote:

Furthermore, since why didnt you just edit your original post? i cant believe how strict some of these fansites are about posts. watch me get banned for this one.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but this is the Lore Forum. We operate differently than the other forums at GWO. Instead of editing original posts (as this would undoubtably cause conflicts in subsequent debate and discussion), we release revised editions of research articles just as any legitimate scientific body does.

If you are asking why you can't edit your original posts, it is because people would abuse this. Someone would present an argument and then be proven wrong, but instead of admitting they are wrong, they could just go back and change their post and pretend they don't know what the person was talking about. Worse yet, someone would flame, and change it before a moderator or administrator could review it.

The rules are here for the benefit of everyone, and I feel they are quite fair. As for getting banned, you haven't done anything wrong, and as long as you follow the rules, you have nothing to worry about.

Now, to avoid further deviation from this topic, if you have any further questions on the rules or policies of GWO, please either PM a moderator or administrator, or post your question in the proper forum.

Planned Expeditions

[:1]I wanted to make a sort of a sign-up thread about organised epeditions. If you have something planned, post it here. The information to be posted if you are organising an expedition should include your the areas you plan to visit and the general goal of the expedition in addition to the sign-up information. If you're signing up for a planned expedition, post your IGN, timeframe and available classes. The purpose of it is to have as much conversation and brainstorming in-game, with the evidence easily reachable. I'll start:

1. In about three or four days time, I would like to take another trip to the desert, namely the Arid Sea, Salt Flats and Diviner's Ascent. The goal is to collect as many pictures of skeletons and remains, as well as analyze the ruins of the ancient civilization. My main IGN is Bozos Of Bones, and I can bring either a Necromancer, Mesmer, Warrior or Elementalist, and I can log in and do this in the european afternoons, GMT from 17 onward, till 1 or 2 in the morning.|||I, Garumn Darkslayer would apply to this expedition, I want to study the old scolls of wisdom lying around the desert...|||I'll tag along, since I wanna compile a map of all the locations of the skeletons in the desert, and eventually all of Tyria. I have a monk, warrior and necromancer. Pick one.

I live in Holland so that's GMT + 1. Can log on from.. I'd say about 5 in the afternoon till.. very late.

IGN is The Rastapoppolis. (Or Wall Hax, since people appear to have problems spelling my name :p)|||Depending on the day, i could lend a hand.

I have two char that have full armor and skills (still working on other two)

Ign: Lazarus Dio Necro

Yulia Alexandros Warrior

Set a date ahead of time and I can give a more definate answer.|||I'll join since I've been through those areas already and know roughly where the giant bones are as well as structures.

IGN: Malhavoc Adhamar R/-

I'm usually online most days anywhere between 7am - 2am GMT. Except Thursdays and possibly Fridays.|||I am European too, and I have semester break. I can be online the whole day if you want.

If you do not need me, I will start Civilization IV and play the Elonian Race.

I can bring a Warrior, Elementalist, Monk or Ranger.

IGN: Sir Longasc, most likely online as Anastasia Kerensky.|||Just add me to your friends list and look me up - most of the time I'll be delighted to join.

Sarak Layghlin|||Well, there's six of you applying for this, and the desert only supports teams of 6. So, who here can make it tomorrow, at around 20 GMT(30 hours from now)?

P.S. I am most glad that this thread actually worked :D Hope to see more planned expeditions in the future, to sign up and go adventuring!|||Do you mean Wednesdday the 22nd? I willl be unable to participate in this little trek. Keep me in mind for future expeditions though!|||Sorry you couldn't make it, Lazarus.

The gathering starts in about 4 and a half hours, I'd recommend Destiny's Gorge as the meeting place, International District 1.

The Origin of Magic: A Thought|||Thanks a lot for compiling all this Gmr; it's truly helpful.|||Always glad to be of assistance. |||Well, this should be fun, please do not bother with utilizing any of the archives. With the revamp all of the links are broken.

Edit: Ah, lovely, this should only take me a few moments. All that is necessary is the removal of forums/ from the links.

Complete.|||I would like to announce that with the efforts of Konig Des Todes on the Druid's Overlook and Durmand Priory forums, he has established archives on each of these, inspired by my own efforts here. We are both currently managing Durmand Priory, GW2Guru's lore forum, and are consistently updating the Durmand Priory Archives as we see discussions of substantial interest blossom forth with the introduction of new information on GW2. However, in an effort to unify the Lore Community further, I have taken the step to establish these Archives as the Lore Community's central archives.

The spoiler tags around the Guru forum's lore archives are not a display of shame, mind you, but to reduce the intimidation of this thread when it is opened, as without spoilers, it's remarkably long.

I would like to thank Konig in his cooperation with myself in attempting to unify the otherwise divided Lore Community, and would like to note that my hesitation in doing this was not due to the current inactivity here, but due to the rate of activity found in the community at large. Had I done this when requested by Konig, I would have been adding in threads every few days or weeks even, as I monitored both forums. (This was prior to the GW2Guru forums.)

Nevertheless, I would like to thank the Lore Community at large for their remarkable if not at times incredible activity, and hope that this will help broaden the awareness of what has been discussed, and encourage further discussion not only in our forums, but in the forums abroad. So, at this, I will rename these to the Central Archives.
