Dragons and the Searing

After reading through the Ecology of the Charr section of the PCG guide I couldn't get this thought out of my head: Dragons destroyed Ascalon.

Specificly, I think that an artifact created by one of the elder dragons is actually the tool used to create the Searing.

The article states that the shaman caste was given the Cauldron of Cataclysm by their new gods (the titans, under order of Abaddon). It also tells us that the cauldron was created before recorded time by powerful beings who had fallen into quiescence and been lost to history.

The charr knew about the human gods, and from the article it implies they may have known of them long before they ever saw a human, and that they considered these gods enemies for the most part. In the eyes of the charr the human gods would hardly be considered quiescent.

The dragons, on the other hand, would fit the description of the creators of the chalice perfectly it seems. Massivly powerful destructive forces which have been lying in hybernation in one form or another long enough for them to be forgotten almost totally by time.

I don't think it was Abaddon's power at all that led to the destruction of Ascalon. Rather, I think he just made use of a tool he had 'borrowed' from somepalce else.

Begs the question, don't you think, what other 'powers of the gods' are actually stolen from the dragons that had been sleeping across the world?

Interesting side note here. It looks like the Cauldron of Cataclysm may still be in use, albeit on a much smaller scale. If you look at the design of the explosive charges used in the first EV story quest you can see they are studded with smaller versions of the searing crystals. Seeing as the 'spent' giant crystals in Ascalon seem to pose no danger I would conclude that these poking out of the explosive charges are fresh/new and still charged with whatever destructive power imbued in them by the chalice.

Maybe after seeing exactly how destructive the huge crystals were (massive overkill really) some shaman or other figured out how turn down the volume on the chalice and produce more practical explosive crystals.|||Quote:

The explosives the charr use actually come from Oozes found in the ooze pit...specifically the Prismatic ones, as the ones produced by those are the only ones stable enough for transport before use.

I also don't think the dragons created the chalice....as terrible and as powerful as they are described, I don't think they would need artifacts to wreak their havoc and destruction. In fact the PCG article actually states that one awoke and the very land it flew over was corrupted. These BAMF don't need any chalices.
